Have you always wanted to play bodhran in a traditional pub session but feel uncertain as to how to go about it? This course is for bodhran players who are fairly comfortable on their instruments, but would like some direction in terms of their session playing. Students should have already taken Bodhran 1 & 2 with Les Starkey, and have a firm grounding in the basics of playing their instruemtns with good rhythm. (It is possible to take Bodhran 2 and this course in the same session) Students will be given instruction on session etiquette & protocol, tips and practice in playing bodhran with other instruments with sensitivity, and how to communicate non-verbally with other players. There will be a focus learning three sets of tunes (a jig set, reel set, & a hornpipe set) in conjunction with the melody players in Irish Traditional Tune Learning Ensemble, with the goal of all students having the experience of playing in a session. The bodhran students will have the opportunity to play with the Tune-Learning players during class time.
