Culture Days 2011 – Riverside Celtic College Cultural Crossroads

This is a great event we’re putting on that we’re really excited for, and part of the great Culture Days series!

What is Culture Days?

“Culture Days is a collaborative pan-Canadian volunteer movement to raise the awarenessaccessibility, participation and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities. A national Steering Committee, together with provincial committees (known as Provincial Task Forces) self-mobilize at the grassroots level to implement concurrent, annual, province-wide public participation events that take place throughout the country over the last weekend of September. The first annual Culture Days event was held in September 2010 in over 700 Canadian cities and towns and, by all accounts, was a great success. The 2011 Culture Days weekend will take place September 30 to October 2, 2011. Annual, Canada-wide Culture Days events feature free, hands-on, interactive activities that invite the public to participate “behind the scenes,” to discover the world of artists, creators, historians, architects, curators, and designers at work in their community.” – www.culturedays.ca

Make sure to check out the event by clicking on the link for our Cultural Crossroads happening in Aberfoyle on Saturday October 1st, and then mark it on your calendar! Also check out other events that are happening in your area!

Riverside Celtic College Cultural Crossroads

Have you ever wanted to play the fiddle or the bagpipes, or unlock the mysteries of the Irish goat-skinned drum, the bodhrán? Have you ever wanted to explore our rich celtic cultural and musical heritage? Riverside Celtic College is hosting a multi-arts celebration of Celtic music and dance at the Aberfoyle Farmers Market, showcasing the musical talents of Celtic musicians of all ages from the Guelph area. All musicians are affiliated with Riverside Celtic College, and the event will feature a series of acoustic performances, presentations, demonstrations and workshops by traditional Irish/Scottish performers, demonstrating that the ancient Celtic aural/oral tradition is alive and well in southern Ontario! There will be workshops and discussions about the individual instruments (concertina, border pipes, fiddle, mandolin, button accordion, low whistle, the bodhrán, and more!), mini-performances, information about classes, and even a country dance (a ceili) that you can take part in, with easy dance steps described by the caller, so that anyone can easily kick up their heels and do it! Start your day listening to some foot-tapping, lively jigs and reels at 9:00 a.m. while you buy your organic produce at the market, try your hand at playing with a tipper and bodhrán, learn how to do the jig step, and enjoy the musical festivities until 1 p.m. All ages welcome!
